I ended up learning a lot about the AEC industry through friendships and employment with Architects and Engineers over the years.

    Quick Facts

    Name:  Kindell Givens Hernandez

    Company: LNV, Inc.

    Role:  Marketing Manager

What services does your company provide? Engineering (civil, structural, and environmental), architecture, and surveying.

Years of Experience: Four years’ AEC experience – plus additional years in sales and marketing-related positions

    Learn more about Kindell:

Everyone at SMPS has a story about why they joined the organization. What’s yours?
I was encouraged to join SMPS by Linda Koch, who has been in the industry for over 30 years. Before joining, I attended luncheons and events here and there under previous supervisors, but Linda was the nudge I needed. In the time I have been a part of SMPS, there’s no doubt the value it has added to me as a marketer and to my firm as a whole. Not only has it been helpful making new contacts and friends in the industry, but the growth I have experienced has helped me become a more well-rounded, confident professional.

What drew you to the A/E/C industry?
Going into the AEC industry was a new challenge that drew me in as a young professional. Not to mention, AEC is among the most influential and respected fields in the world. Like many other marketers in this industry, I have surprised myself with what I have been able to accomplish. The sky is truly the limit.

    Where are you originally from?
A little suburb outside of Corpus Christi, called Calallen.

Tell us something really interesting about you?
I’m a former gymnast and tumbler. I can still do a back handspring and some other tricks, as long as there is Advil on hand after.

Where’s your favorite place to eat in San Antonio?
Il Sogno at the Pearl (so sad to see it close). I recently moved with my firm to San Antonio from Corpus Christi, so I am still exploring what the city has to offer. I am a big foodie, so I am always taking recommendations!

What do you like to do in your free time?
Nerd alert: In my free time, I love to binge watch Netflix documentaries. I also love spending time with my dogs and my husband. And, of course, shopping at Loft and the sale rack at Anthropolgie.

    Do you have any pets?
Yes! I have two furbabies named Basil and Brooks. Brooks is actually our newest addition. We got him a few weeks before transitioning to San Antonio. Between the move and sibling rivalry gearing up, the last few weeks have been...interesting, but very exciting as well.

What would be impossible for you to give up?
I would risk my life to ensure I have my morning coffee.

    Describe your ideal vacation.
Any beach with clear crystal water. The Turks and Caicos Islands are my next stop.

    Name:  Eva Ramirez

    Company: RVK Architects

    Role:  Director of Marketing

What services does your company provide? Architecture, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture

    Years of Experience: 29

    Learn more about Eva:

You are celebrating 20 years with SMPS!! Why have you remained a member?
SMPS was the first organization that launched me into my career. I knew nothing about the industry but quickly learned this organization was my stepping stone into an extremely interesting and exciting business world. I could not believe there was actually an organization with people that did what I did and really cared to help. Still to this day, SMPS is still there to help mentor and educate all – love it!

If you could go back 20 years to your first day with SMPS and share a piece of wisdom you have learned, what would you tell yourself?
Embrace networking and build even more relationships.

How has SMPS contributed to your success as a marketing and business development professional?
It has offered countless opportunities to connect with clients, potential clients and people within the industry to develop long term relationships throughout the nation. It has given me access to educational opportunities through the local chapter, regional conferences and national conferences to help hone my skills and keep me in tune with current trends and industry standards. More importantly, it has helped me develop deep strong friendships with cream of the crop business developers that helped shape who I am and keep me reaching for higher goals.

To which project are you most proud of having contributed?
The creation and development of the marketing departments for both JQ and RVK.

What drew you to the AEC industry?
My night gig at IRS in Austin was over and a friend called me to offer me a job at an engineering firm doing accounts payable. Of all things when I did not like numbers, yes IRS was numbers too but I had day classes to attend and it paid the bills but I digress. I took the job and loved the industry even from behind the calculator. Luckily after six months, the marketing person left on an extended vacation and I naturally fit in. Since then I propelled into this industry learning all I could and meeting as many people as possible. I continue to love the industry and all of the outstanding people I have met along the way. .

Where’s your favorite place to eat in San Antonio?
    Two Bros BBQ

    Where are you originally from?

What would be impossible for you to give up?
In the industry, the numerous friends I have made and in my personal life, visits to see my mom and family as well as my pup, Biscuit.

    Quick Facts

    Name:  Laura Rasmussen

    Company: Lake|Flato Architects

    Role:  Proposal Manager

What services does your company provide? Lake|Flato focuses on highly sustainable architecture that is rooted to its place and successfully merges with the landscape. We seek to create buildings that are tactile and modern, environmentally responsible and authentic, artful and crafted.

    Years of Experience: 16

    Learn more about Laura:

Everyone at SMPS has a story about why they joined the organization. What’s yours?
My BD Director suggested I join as a way to get more involved and connected within the SA AEC community!

What drew you to the A/E/C industry?
I really enjoy “technical creativity” that this industry demands, from redefining complex ideas and processes in clear, innovative ways, translating archispeak or managing multiple deadlines and teams. I found that I really thrive in such an intense, challenging environment.

    Where are you originally from?
I moved to San Antonio in September 2016 from Little Rock, AR. I grew up in a very, very small town in southeast Arkansas.

Tell us something really interesting about you?
My “starter home” was a 120-year-old fixer-upper. I started a tiny friction fire the day I moved in because I did not know that drills had a reverse setting. Luckily, I have really good friends with extensive renovation experience who were willing to teach me…after they quit laughing. I ended up doing most of the renovations myself and really enjoyed the process.

Where’s your favorite place to eat in San Antonio?
I’ve only been here just over a year, so I am still trying out as many restaurants as I can. Nonna, La Frite, Dignowity Meats are all fantastic.

What do you like to do in your free time?
You’ll usually find me running on the Riverwalk (I’m training for my first marathon), trying out new dinner and craft beer spots with my friends, or on the lake with my paddleboard or kayak in the summer. Although, most often, I end up spending free time making mental to do lists of things of everything I need to get done at work!

    Do you have any pets?
Snacks & Munchies, two fat cats who think they are dogs.

What would be impossible for you to give up?
    Claritin. Mountain Cedar is AWFUL.

    Describe your ideal vacation.
I have always wanted to go to Iceland and “camp” under the aurora. But, it would have to be a really, really nice, warm camp.

    Quick Facts

    Name:  Joe Irizarry

    Company: Raba Kistner, Inc.

    Role:  Vice President-Corporate Development

What services does your company provide? Project management, engineering and environmental consulting, and infrastructure quality assurance

    SMPS Anniversary: September 26, 2007

How long have you been an SMPS Member? Over 10 years

    Learn more about Joe:

Everyone at SMPS has a story about why they joined the organization. What’s yours?
I got "voluntold" to participate when I joined the firm.  We've been a part of the local chapter since its inception so there's an expectation to participate and give back.

What drew you to the A/E/C industry?
RK used to consult for the company that I worked for.  I admired their folks and the firm's reputation.  An opportunity to represent them drew me into the industry.

    Where are you originally from?
I was born in Atlanta, GA (Ft. McPherson).  As an army brat, our family moved frequently.

Tell us something really interesting about you?
I studied martial arts between 4th and 7th grade. Over time, as the highest ranked child, I led the children's (K-12) classes. I also trained with the adult class (soldiers) on weekends. Whenever I was the highest ranking person in those sessions, I would serve as instructor for them, too.

Some didn't take kindly to a child instructor and helped show that during sparring sessions!  The skills I learned slipped away long ago.  The humility, determination and self-confidence required to credibly lead as a child still serves me well today!

Where’s your favorite place to eat in San Antonio?
    India Oven

What do you like to do in your free time?
Travel with my wife, Tracy (and kids sometimes), read, write, see movies and hang out with the family.

    Do you have any pets?
We have two shelter dogs, Roxie and Zoey.

What would be impossible for you to give up?

    Describe your ideal vacation.
Comfortable lodging.  Dining and drinking where locals do.  Culture.  History.  Low-key adventure.  If my wife and I can have all of those things AND use some frequent flyer points…we have an ideal vacation.
